Dear Parents
Beginning is easy – continuing is hard.
Japanese Proverb
The start of every school year is always an exciting time for our children. They meet up with old friends and teachers, have new classes to explore, new friends to find and new experiences ahead of them.
I am pleased to say that 2010 has started really well at school. It was disappointing not to have the building project started but that hasn’t gotten in the way of all classes enjoying their first week back.
My thanks to the PTS for organising the Coffee Man to be on site last Thursday morning. It was a lovely start to the term with a large number of parents gathering to catch up and enjoy each others’ company. It was also an opportunity to help welcome some of our new families to VAS.
This is probably the busiest term for the PTS and on Monday evening the team spent a couple of hours discussing the variety of events, which are organised for term one. Please offer them, and our school your support. The purpose of the PTS is two-fold, supporting the school and families with both fundraising and friend-raising activities.
Next week we have our school picnic, Thursday 18th at 5.00pm, and with this newsletter you will receive an information flyer about the event. It is a wonderful opportunity for all, new families and old to get together socially at the start of the year.
If I haven’t had an opportunity to catch up with you in person yet then “Happy New Year” and welcome back.
Kind regards
Allan Short
Principal
Meet the teacher – tonight!
The meeting starts tonight at 7.00pm in the hall. We will then move from there into individual classrooms where you will have an opportunity to listen to your child’s class teacher discuss arrangements for the year. Following, the PTS will be serving refreshments, weather permitting this will be outside of the library on the netball courts.
We believe that parking around Victoria Avenue may be a problem as Baradene have a function starting at 6.00pm. So please either walk or allow time to perhaps park further afield.
Powhiri
Last Friday many of our children participated in a Powhiri at school. One of our New Entrant children was transferring to us from Te Kohanga Reo o Te Puna Kohungahunga, a full-immersion Maori Kindergarten. It is traditional for her Kohanga Reo to travel to the new school, together with some of their pre-schoolers to officially ‘hand-over’ their taonga (treasure) to the new school.
Room 11 were delighted to welcome their new classmate in this ceremony and they were supported by representatives from the Junior, Middle and Senior syndicates. The children sang beautifully and it was a wonderful occasion. Our thanks go to members of our Maori community for assisting us with the ceremony.
Following the Powhiri the staff and children from Te Kohanga Reo o Te Puna Kohungahunga enjoyed morning tea in the hall before returning back to their Kohanga Reo.

Walking School Bus
The Walking School buses are a very special part of our school culture. They are a safe, fun and healthy way to walk to and from school. We have a large number of children walking every day and we are always keen to welcome new families to our routes. Contact details for each of the coordinators, together with a map showing all of our seven routes, are available on our school website.
Safety is paramount and the buses operate with strict adult:child ratios. Parents of children walking on the buses share responsibility for walking duties and each child has to be registered before joining. Please do not just drop off your child on a walking school bus without first registering them, and including yourself on the supervision roster (all parents with children on the WSB walk at least once each week) - to do so may compromise the safety of the children and puts those adults in charge of the bus in a potentially difficult situation.
Newsletters
The newsletter will no longer be sent home in hard copy each week. We will email the link to the newsletter to families each Thursday, where it will appear on the school website. ( Not only will this save on administration time but the cost of printing each week is not insignificant, both financially and environmentally.
If any families find it difficult to access the newsletter electronically a copy to be available for you to pick up from the rack in the school office. There will be a copy pinned on the noticeboard in each classroom.
Printing the newsletter from the website
You can download a printer friendly version by pressing the button at the top righthand corner of the newsletter.
Searching our Website
You can search our website including the new web based newsletters using the search facility at the top of this page on the right side of the school banner.

ROOM 8 - Year 2
First week back and look how productive they have been!
"The Burglar" by Oliver G
Last night a burglar broke into both cars. My Dad's car was unlocked. But Dad's car things were not stolen. My Mum was sad. We called the police. My Mum's sunglasses and my Mum's broken computer were stolen.
"The Airport" by Lydia
On Wednesday I went to the airport with my Dad to pick up my Mum's Mum from the airport. We took her home to see my Mum. My Mum's heart was very happy. Then we took her to Ginny's creche. My Grandma was happy to see Ginny for the first time. She came from Belgrade. She flew on Emerites. I wish I could go on a plane.
"The Boat" by Sophie
I went to the beach on the boat. We jumped off the boat and my Mum caught me and dumped me in the water. It was funny. We had a big lay down and the big waves made me fly in the air.
"Parnell Pool" by Lucy.
On the weekend I went to Parnell Pool and my neighbour came and my cousin came. I went in the slide and my cousin went in the slide too. Her name was Ally and she had a sister too. Her name was Victoria. My sister was playing with my neighbour. I put my head under the water lots of times and I liked it and I was happy.
