Term 1 No 3 - 25 February 2010

Dear Parents

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.”
Jim Valvano, Basketball Coach

Yesterday evening we held our first Coaching Workshop. Clare Whittington had gathered together some of Auckland’s top coaches to talk with parents about the challenges, opportunities and rewards that come with coaching a sports team. We also discussed expectations; what should we realistically expect of our coaches, players, managers and parents.

The evening started with a talk from Duane Mann, Manager of the GACU (Greater Auckland Coaching Unit). Duane played League at the highest level, captaining both New Zealand and Tonga. Whilst he agreed that a good coach is a mixture of many qualities, when put on the spot he identified “honouring the confidence of each player” as perhaps the number one quality. He described the many ways in which it is possible, particularly at a young age, to dent or even destroy a young players confidence to the extent that they may be put off a game for life.

Dave Richardson from Parnell Cricket Club talked about the effect of seeing the positive in a performance. Many coaching sessions can be a succession of well meaning but negative statements “…what you’re doing wrong is…” His argument was that by encouraging a coach to first recognise and acknowledge what a player is doing well, we build up self-esteem and confidence in a player. The result of such an approach is the development of trust between coach and player. Once trust is established a player will often point out their own faults, and ask for assistance with an aspect of their game even before the coach intervenes.

Like Jim Valvano said in his quote above perhaps the single greatest motivator for any child is knowing that a trusted adult believes in them. As parents, teachers or coaches we all have an incredible power to influence the experiences of our children. All of the coaches present, including parents and staff, were united in wanting to be the best they could possibly be to help all of our children both enjoy their sport and reach their potential. Many thanks to Clare for organising an inspirational evening and we hope that you may wish to join us for future events.

We are just three weeks away from our major school fundraiser of the year, The Promises Auction, and I hope that all school families will participate in what is sure to be a wonderful event.

Our children are hoping that you will get involved too and have produced a short video to tell you just what they think of promises (thanks to Miss McQuinn for helping them all with the production). Check the video here http://victoriaave.com/school-events

Thank you to everyone involved with organising last week’s wonderful school picnic. Check out the school events page and re-live some of the best (and wettest) moments! http://victoriaave.com/school-events

Kind regards,
Allan Short
Principal

Sporting Successes

ICE HOCKEY: Micah Staden-Lea took part this weekend in the second AIHA Peewee Ice Hockey tournament bewteen the Canterbury Rep and Auckland Rep teams.  The first tournament was won by Auckland and this weekend Canterbury won it.  Over the weekend they play 4 games to determine the winners of the tournament.  All visiting players are billeted out creating friendships that will hopefully last until the players end up playing in the same team for NZ the "Ice Blacks".  Micah will have 4 more of these tournaments to attend this year travelling both to Christchurch and Dunedin ending with the National AIHA Representative Ice Hockey Tournament in August to determine who is the best team for 2010. This game will determine which players are selected to play for the NZ Peeweee Rep team to play in Australia in October.

NATIONAL SWIMMING COMPETITIONS: After spending Friday at the VAS swimming sports, Angus Cleland competed at the New Zealand Juniors.  Angus had qualified for two events - 50m & 200m breaststroke, and came in the top twenty in NZ in both races.
Angus joined the Kings Swim Club following last year's school swimming sports.  Another member of the club, Grace Tattersfield, won the VAS swimming cup in 2007, and won 3 silver medals at the NZ Juniors.

WEETBIX TRIATHLON: Running through the crowds of people and supporters was amazing and they were all so encouraging and yelling to spur us on.
It was great to do the Tri with so many other kids from VAS.
The best bit was going across the finish line  with Nina and having Hamish Carter (very cool Top NZ triathlete)  give us our own gold  medals.
The good news is  that I get to do it all again on the 21st March at the North Shore event and it is not too late for anyone else to enter if they want to give it a go too.

 The Boy In the Sun

On day Michael was packing his bag ready for school. His mum said to Michael, “Michael remember to put your hat in your bag”.
“Don’t worry mum, it is in my tote tray”.
Then Michael went to school.

At school Michael didn’t find his hat. Michael was terrified. He had always remembered his hat at school. But he said, “I don’t care”.
So at lunch Michael went out in the sun. He soon got sunburned and he didn’t even know it.

Later on the teacher could see the boys red burnt skin. The teacher had to hell him off. The teacher said, “now listen here Michael, I can see so much sun burn all over you. Anyway, now where is your hat?”
“I don’t know”.
“Well how about you look in the lost property?” said the teacher.
“Ok” said Michael.
So Michael went to the lost property.

So he went inside his classroom and went to the lost property. He looked in all kinds of places but he didn’t see his hat. But then he looked at the very bottom of the lost property bin, and guess what? He found his hat! He was so happy.

Out back in the field he put his hat on and he was free to play.
Written by Charlie Collard, Room 17, age 7years.

Moral of the story as decided by Room 17 children: ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HAT SO YOU DON’T GET SUNBURNT. MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR HAT IN THE RIGHT PLACE WHEN IT ISN’T ON YOUR HEAD, SO YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS FOR NEXT TIME!!

Sun Poem
The sun looks like a giant meteor,
The sun looks like a planet.
The sun sounds like a microwave,
The sun sounds like a tidal wave.
The sun feels like you’re on fire,
The sun feels like you’re in a fire heaven.
 By Ben Fleming, age 7yrs.

Sunburn Poem
Sunburn looks like tomato sauce on your skin,
Sunburn looks like fire on your body.
Sunburn feels like you’re on fire in the light,
Sunburn feels like you’re terrified and in pain.
Sunburn sounds like you’re screaming your lungs out,
Sunburn sounds like you really have to shout.
By Kristen Hansen, age 7yrs.
