Term 1 No 7 - 25 March 2010

 Dear Parents

Last Friday’s Promises Auction was a wonderful success. The generosity of families, friends and the wider community of the school has been overwhelming, both in the lead up to the event and on the night.

Ticket sales far exceeded our target of 200, but fortunately the team had also over-catered in terms of food and drink so nobody was left without sustenance!

The individual thank yous would be too long to list here, perhaps I can cover it all by saying thank you to the organisational team; to those who contributed promises or donations in any form; to those who bought tickets and prizes; to those who cooked, played, served or any other way contributed to the running of the evening; to those who tidied up and to our generous hosts.

In addition to raising a total far in excess of our initial goal the evening will best be remembered as a great night out!

When the final total is calculated I will of course share it with you all, but on behalf of all of the children I want to say THANK YOU for really helping make a difference to our school.

Junior School Redevelopment
Just over 48 hours after the last party-goer left the Promises evening our builders arrived on site to commence the Junior School building project. Fences have been erected, the old block has been stripped out and hopefully before the end of term it will be lifted onto rollers and then relocated through 90 degrees so that it sits alongside Room 10. The children are very excited about what is happening and the Juniors will be keeping a photographic diary of the project’s progress!

Over the holiday we will then start the complete refurbishment of this block together with the commencement of the new build, which will include two new classrooms, new toilets, sports storage area and two changing rooms. The builders hope to hand back the old block to us midway through Term 2 and then have the new block ready for Term 3.

There are now restrictions on play space around the Junior playgrounds, please ensure that your children are aware of the potential dangers particularly if you use the site out of normal school hours.

Goodbye
Tomorrow is Miss Rogers last day in Room 6 before she heads overseas for her big OE adventure. I would like to say a huge thank you to Leigh for her work at VAS but particularly over this past term when she has given stability and leadership to her children in what were difficult initial circumstances. Good luck and our love and best wishes go with you on your travels Leigh!

Kind regards,

Allan Short
Principal

FLIPPABALL
Flippaball in Term Two

Victoria Ave has a long and proud reputation playing Flippaball, a mini-version of waterpolo played in a shallow pool.  It is a great way for children to experience sport in a pool environment.
We play a 20-minute game on Sunday afternoon at the Scared Heart Aqua Centre in Glendowie.  Games are played in two 10-minute halves with 7 children on each side, and a couple of reserves that are rotated in.  There is a cost of approximately $50 for the term, plus a pool entry charge for adult spectators of $1.
In term two Victoria Ave will be looking to enter teams in the Year 3/4 competition and the Year 5/6 competition. No experience is required and typically we just run development sessions prior to the game.  While children don't have to be able to swim, water confidence is essential.
The teams are run by a small group of parents who have all learnt the game along the way - if you are able to help out then you would be most welcome.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions via email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or on my cell (021 665 887)

Entries are due for Term Two during the school holidays.  If your child is interested in playing Flippaball, please click here to download a registration form and return it to Miss Whittington by Wednesday 31st March.

FLIPPABALL DRAW
Sunday 28 March      5:50pm Remuera Makos vs Victoria Ave A Grade (Wearing Blue Caps)

BASKETBALL RESULTS
Vicky Ave Vikings
The Year 5 Vicky Ave Vickings played our very own Year 6 VAS Vipers this week so the competition was intense and they all played out of their skins. Fraser Nicholas received player of the day for some great attack and a fantastic goal. Sarah, Madi and Emma also all scored goals and Michael Peters received the magic moment for a fantastic offensive lay-up move. We lost (by a country mile) but everyone loved it!

Training for Year 5 and 6 is on a Thursday morning between 7.45am and 8.30am, we now have enough players for both the Year 5 and 6 teams however we will be looking to sign up new players later on in the year.

VAS Vipers
VAS Vicpers played Remuera Primary in a nail biter.  The Vipers showed real determination, holding on to an early lead, and eventually winning the game 6 - 5. Player of the Day was Daniel Dance and Most Improved Player was Alex Hoffman, both for their big improvement on attack and defence.  Joshua Kennard scored two baskets and William Thompson scored one basket.  The team's effort was outstanding - well Done!
