Term 1 No 8 - 1 April 2010

 Dear Parents

There has been a great response to our new online system for booking interview times. We have had 170 parents use the system to book 250 interviews in just the first 20 hours of operation! If you missed the email yesterday the details are as follows:

Parent/teacher interviews will be held early next term (Week 2) on Wednesday 28th April and Thursday 29th April. This will be an excellent opportunity to discuss your child’s learning summary. This year we are trialing an online interview booking system at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz
The process is extremely straightforward simply enter our school code UTHEG and press “Go”. You will then be guided through three simple steps, and a few moments later you will get an email confirming your interview time(s).
For those who do not have internet access you may come to the school office and Kinzsa will arrange an interview time for you.

Kind regards,

Allan Short
Principal

Literacy - Room 4 have looked at the dilemma of allowing young children to own cellphones - an interesting perspective!

Kate Dean having a phone at 7 years old

Should Kate Dean have a mobile phone at seven years of age? I’m going to tell you my reasons why this is not right. The first one is the parents, the parents are the ones who keep there children safe. The child/children should never be left alone. Kate would not be not be responsible to handle such a valuable item.

The parents keep there own children safe they do not need a mobile phone if the parent has trust in Kate. If Kate got into a situation so bad she had to call her parents the office would kindly do that for her.

A child at her age should never be left alone were she would have to call someone. It is against the law to leave a young child unattended. The teachers at school will look after her around the school. A child at her age wouldn’t be left alone by her parents, by the school or by anybody.

Kate would be too irresponsible to handle such an expensive item. She could just phone her parents every thirty-seconds and waste money on phone cards. It could get lost or she could get it confiscated. She would use it for the silliest reasons like throw it up high and try to catch it. throw it on the grass etc. It would be just silly if she had a mobile phone.

I have told you about parents keeping their children safe, children being left alone and Kate being irresponsible with a mobile phone. Now if you believe a young child like Kate having a phone is wrong then don’t give your young child a mobile phone.

By Harrison Miller

Kids Having Phones - Argument.

Even though I love using a phone, I can see that there are many reasons why you shouldn’t.

There are lots of kids who have cellphones and roughly 30% have cyber-bully. It mainly happens to kids from other kids in teh 10-16 years. Cyber-bullying is when somebody sends a mean message using technology, which in this case is using mobile phones.

Cellphones are very expensive bits of equipment and if they get lost, then their parents have just wasted lots of money. Cellphones are hard to find, because they are very small.  If you are not responsible with them, they could get damaged with water, getting dropped, smashed, etc, then their parents have just wasted used up their money.

Cellphones produce a small amount of radiation to the brain, particulary to people that use them too long. Whether they can give brain damage or not is unknown. Cellphones are known for producing heat. If you leave one next to a raw egg for too long the egg will cook.

Over-all, I know that there are advantages for parents to have mobile phones, but for children they are inappropriate and unnecessary.

SUMMER FIELD DAY

On Tuesday the children all trooped out to various playing fields around Auckland for the annual Summer Field Day.
We had some outstanding performances from the children that were involved.  The girls and boys touch team coached by Miss McQuinn and Mrs Holden came 1st and 2nd.  The children put in a great show of skills and developed their performances.  The Softball teams had fun over at Waikaraka Park coached by Miss Whittington and Mrs Young.  They played some good softball improving their fielding and batting as the games progressed.
The tennis players represented the school well with some good doubles being played against strong opposition.  The cricketers coached by Mr Cates put in a successful day all round with great displays of batting and bowling skills.

Well done to all of the children who represented the school.
Next term we will start to practice for the Winter exchanges which will be starting towards the middle of the term.
