Term 2 No 3 - 6 May 2010

Dear Parents

At the risk of placing a jinx on matters hasn’t the weather been amazing!? We have had the most beautiful days this week and it has been a continuation of the wonderful start to the term. It is perhaps most noticeable for our sports teams as they have been eagerly preparing for their winter sport fixtures. It has been fantastic to see all of the enthusiasm and dedication from 7.30am onwards as children arrive early for training.

On Tuesday our senior students had a very successful start to their inter-school fixtures with Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Soccer teams in action. Tonight we have the opening fixtures in the Auckland Netball competition, which will see around 100 children from Years 3-6 turning out to represent the school; good luck everyone!

Last Friday Nicholas Kwasza proved to be a most able deputy as he enjoyed being Principal for the Day; his mufti day and longer morning tea decisions being particularly well-received by the school, well done Nick!

The Parent Teacher meetings last week were a great success and hopefully you had ample opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with the classroom teacher. I would like to thank the staff for not only the time they gave to each family last week but also for the thought they put into preparing for those meetings. As you can imagine it’s an exhausting process but one that is a vital part of our home/school communication. That said, it is equally important that all parents feel that the door is always open at VAS. If you have any concerns at all about your child please discuss with the class teacher; in many respects the ongoing communication throughout the year is even more vital than the ‘formal’ occasions such as last week.

I would like to give one last reminder to parents of two forthcoming events:
  • next week’s Thinking Maps Parent Workshop (see information below) – please respond to the office by Monday if you wish to attend
  • Board of Trustees elections – tomorrow is the last day to vote (Click here to link to candidate profiles)
Kind regards

Allan Short
Principal

Thinking Maps – Parent Workshop
On Wednesday 12th May we are running a Parent Workshop to discuss not only the introduction of Thinking Maps at VAS but also the research and pedagogy behind a real revolution in educational thinking. Over the past 20 years our knowledge and understanding of how individuals learn best has been transformed…we want to explain to you how brain research has impacted our teaching and learning at VAS.

This will hopefully be as fun as it is informative and in the past many parents have taken elements of the workshop away and used it in their own businesses and lives. The PTS will provide a few nibbles and drinks will be available. I hope many of you will take the opportunity to come along. In order to cater appropriately can you please rsvp to the school office

Winter Exchange against Royal Oak Primary School

Soccer
First off we hopped on the bus at 12.45pm.  It zoomed off in a puff of smoke, and then finally we were there at Royal Oak School.  We walked proudly onto the field, sat down and had a snack, then show time.  We raced onto the field and the game began.  The first amazing stunt was by Jamie Lamb, swinging his back foot around and booting the ball, the second was by Dylan Brown and William MacFarlane.  They both went in and knocked the ball with their knees.  Then the ball was booted into the goal.  All of us raced back to the centre of the field cheering and yelling.  Then we scored another and another and another until we had four goals.  Then I switched from defence to midfield and a whole lot of other players were in different positions.  It was the middle of the second half by now and William scored two amazing goals.  We finished off with amazing defence and attack.  Then the whistle blew and it was the end of the game.  We all sat down exhausted and had a big drink from our canteens.  We were so triumphant and proud to have played such a great first game.

Netball
Pink Team
The netball teams from year 5 & 6 headed to play Royal Oak on Tuesday. When we walked into Royal Oak it was lunchtime and all the little kids were staring at us with goldfish mouths and eyes the size of saucers. They were obviously surprised at the sight of strangers. Once we got inside the school we got onto a court and warmed up. We were then assigned a court and a team to play. In the time that we were there we played three short games.  We played three Royal Oak teams. We won all of our games with scores of:  6 nil, 4 nil and 3 - 2. All together we had a fabulous time.

Red Team
It was a spectacular day for the Victoria Avenue Reds on Tuesday afternoon.  All three games won against Royal Oak’s A and B year 6 teams.  The biggest win was against Royal Oak’s A team 18 – 2, there was great attacking and defending on both sides of the court.

Overall a great day at Royal Oak Primary School, thank you to all the parents and teachers who came along and supported Victoria Avenue.

Rugby
The "First Fifteen" rugby team had a great game winning 39 nil playing at College Rifles against Royal Oak Primary. Play of the Day went to Mason Hughes and conversions were ably kicked by Harrison Miller.

Hockey
Despite transport problems and therefore a difficult start, the hockey drew against Royal Oak. The team is to be commended for the good natured way they responded to the "scenic drive" to the venue - they are a supportive and happy bunch!

MORE SPORTS' NEWS

Basketball

VAS Vikings played against St Ignatius and lost. The team played a very spirited game and Michael Peters attacking earned him Player of the Day. Emma Collard scored the only basket and along with great rebounding got Memorable Moment

VAS Vipers played the Meadowbank Marvels, and although the Marvels had some "ring-in's" from their top team, the Vipers won 10 - 0.  This was the last game of the regular rounds and it looks like the Vipers will end up 3rd on the table - an outstanding improvement on last season where they were at the bottom of the table.  Awesome!  Player of the Day was Alex Hoffman for big improvements in all aspects of the game.  William Thompson received Most Memorable Moment for his rebounding/shooting and his improvement on defence. Baskets were scored by William Thompson (1), Alice Foster (1) and Josh Kennard (3).  A great effort by all team members!

Year 6 basketball competed on Monday against a well organised side with great defence and attack the game was very exciting to watch.  A real improvement shown in the team’s performance with some outstanding passes and shots at goal.

Player of the day – Lucy Scarbourgh
Magic Moment – Nick Kwasza

Netball
Good luck to all the netball teams who will be starting their grading games this week at the Auckland Netball centre.  They have been training hard with their coaches over the last few weeks.
