Term 2 No 4 - 13 May 2010

 Dear Parents

Yesterday evening around 50 parents joined staff at our Thinking Maps workshop. We discussed not only the introduction of Thinking Maps at VAS but also the research and pedagogy behind a real revolution in educational thinking. Over the past 20 years our knowledge and understanding of how individuals learn best has been transformed. This in turn impacts us all, as parents and teachers, as we try to prepare our children for life in a rapidly changing world.

As part of the evening we looked at two video clips. The first one Shift Happens (www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNutcmyShW4) sets the scene for the “exponential times” in which we are living. At the end of the evening we watched a famous TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson. He discusses Creativity in Schools and, in addition to being a very entertaining speaker, makes a strong and moving case for re-evaluating our concept of what is important in education. I believe it is a piece that every parent and teacher should watch. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY)

Board of Trustees
Many schools around the country struggle to find people prepared to stand for BOT elections but we had 14 names in this year’s ballot. Elsewhere in the newsletter you will find the results of the election that were announced today. I look forward to working for the next three years alongside our successful candidates.

I also wish to say thank you to everyone who put his or her name forward. Irrespective of the final result I know that all concerned are great supporters of the school, and by standing have shown their willingness to contribute time and energy into helping us make VAS the best possible experience for each child here.

After-School Care
After many years organising and running our After-School programme Barbara has indicated to me that she wishes to retire. She will continue to run the ASC until such time as we have another operator in place, be that at the end of 2010 or sooner.

We are currently therefore looking at alternative providers for families requiring ASC. If anyone wishes to discuss this opportunity, or if you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards

Allan Short
Principal

SPORTS RESULTS

Basketball

VAS Vikings played and lost against Magix. Maddi Devereux and Jan Carson scoring a basket each.
Player of the Day - Luca Mercer for his great rebounding skills.
Memorable Moment -  went to Jan Carson for his great basket and fast breaks up the court.

VAS Vipers -  One Basket Short of Making the Final - A Truly Outstanding Effort!
The VAS Vipers played St Thomas's Cougars in their semi-final on Wednesday night, with the winner progressing to next week's final.  The Cougars were placed 2nd at the end of the normal season, and the Vipers were placed 3rd.  Last time they met the Cougars won 14 -4, so it was a tough challenge for the Vipers to win.

It was an epic battle, with the Cougars taking the lead and going into half time 8 -2 ahead.  The Vipers showed great heart and fought back after half time, scoring early and eventually equalling the Cougars 8 - 8.  The Cougars scored the final basket with 4 minutes to go and held onto the lead, winning the game 10 - 8.

I know the Vipers were disappointed at not winning, but they should be very very proud of their effort - only one basket short of making the final (and also the opportunity to shave the coach's head if they had won).
Player of the Day - Josh Kennard (3 baskets)
Memorable Moments - Alice Foster (1 basket)
Both players received these awards for their attacking play - they both dribbled right through the Cougar's defence using their speed, and created chances to score.

Year 6 Basketball
The Year 6 team lost their game against St Ignatius. Score 8-11.
Player of the Day - Ethan for great defensive play
Magic Moment - Ava for getting 2 baskets in a row
Team played well but unfortunately couldn't make the baskets counts.

Netball
