Dear Parents
Yesterday evening around 50 parents joined staff at our Thinking Maps workshop. We discussed not only the introduction of Thinking Maps at VAS but also the research and pedagogy behind a real revolution in educational thinking. Over the past 20 years our knowledge and understanding of how individuals learn best has been transformed. This in turn impacts us all, as parents and teachers, as we try to prepare our children for life in a rapidly changing world.
As part of the evening we looked at two video clips. The first one
Shift Happens (
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNutcmyShW4) sets the scene for the “exponential times” in which we are living. At the end of the evening we watched a famous
TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson. He discusses
Creativity in Schools and, in addition to being a very entertaining speaker, makes a strong and moving case for re-evaluating our concept of what is important in education. I believe it is a piece that every parent and teacher should watch. (

Board of Trustees
Many schools around the country struggle to find people prepared to stand for BOT elections but we had 14 names in this year’s ballot. Elsewhere in the newsletter you will find the results of the election that were announced today. I look forward to working for the next three years alongside our successful candidates.
I also wish to say thank you to everyone who put his or her name forward. Irrespective of the final result I know that all concerned are great supporters of the school, and by standing have shown their willingness to contribute time and energy into helping us make VAS the best possible experience for each child here.
After-School Care
After many years organising and running our After-School programme Barbara has indicated to me that she wishes to retire. She will continue to run the ASC until such time as we have another operator in place, be that at the end of 2010 or sooner.
We are currently therefore looking at alternative providers for families requiring ASC. If anyone wishes to discuss this opportunity, or if you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
Kind regards
Allan Short
