Term 3 No 1 - 22 July 2010

 Dear Parents

Welcome to what promises to be an exciting term three! There is much to look forward to, as you will see on the accompanying calendar, including the senior school performance Young Hercules in Week 10. The planning has been going on for some weeks now and we are delighted to welcome back to the school Fiona Flynn and Megan Jennings, who will be helping staff and children prepare the performances.

The Key Competency, which is our school focus this term, is that of Relating to Others. The children will draw upon many of their Habits of Mind as they consider this perhaps none more so than Listening with Empathy and Thinking Interdependently, please encourage use of both of these habits outside of school too!

Alongside this the school IBL focus is Expressing Ourselves. The Junior and Middle syndicates are exploring this through Pasifika and the arts and culture pertaining to the Pacific Islands. Whilst are Seniors will be relating their unit of study to their end of term performance. On our website and in this newsletter (see below)  you can find a link to our Term 3 syndicate newsletters Junior (Years 0-2); Middle (Years 3&4); Senior (Years 5&6).

The PTS too have several events and activities organised, please take particular note of the Quiz Night and ‘Snakes’ flyers which have come home this week and are detailed elsewhere in the newsletter.

Junior School Redevelopment
If you have been down to the Junior end of school during the week you will see that the new building is nearing completion. Rooms 12 and 14 look forward to moving in sometime soon and Miss Whittington will be delighted to have use of the new changing rooms and PE storage facility.
Over the holiday the Junior Playground also received an extension and we are delighted with the result.

During Term 3 the BOT will be considering phase two of the Junior School development. This will involve the refurbishment of Rooms 7-10 and work to the rear of these classrooms making greater use of the forest space. As you know our fundraising this year has been in support of this development and we hope to create decking and pathways in this area to make best use of the natural environment. Please support the PTS initiatives this year as they will help us make considerable progress on our plans over the summer months.

Some good news on this front is that Hobson Community Board have given us a grant of $5000 towards creating a ‘boardwalk’ along the bottom of the forest area as part of this development. I must particularly thank the parents from our gardening group who have assisted with this application, Debra, Kate and Louisa; your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Term 3 Calendar
All events are available on our website this week and a hard copy has been sent home today. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of all information. If there are any changes or additional events you will be advised in future newsletter and via the website.

Congratulations
Further to our report in the last newsletter we have been informed that Monish Masters has also been selected for Auckland Representative Hockey team; well done Monish!

PTS Quiz Night
The Quiz Night is only two weeks away (Saturday 7th August – End of week 3) This is always a great evening so please support the event, reserve the date in your diary and start getting your team together now!

Kind regards

Heads up for Kids - Please bring your old/useless coins and money to our school office!
Resene Paints and Lions Clubs throughout the country are aiming to make a big investment in New Zealand’s young people by collecting old banknotes, coins and foreign currency that are not legal tender.
how_to_get_involvedIt is estimated by the Reserve Bank that there are millions of dollars in obsolete coins and banknotes sitting around in drawers and cupboards in households right throughout New Zealand.
The coins and bank notes can’t be used as legal tender, however; they can be redeemed at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in Wellington - dollar for dollar. The foreign currency will be redeemed in the country of origin through the Lions international network.
The “old” money will be invested in New Zealand’s most precious asset and provide a springboard for good Kiwi kids to become amazing New Zealanders of the future.
Money raised in Heads Up for Kids will  help teachers training for the Lions Quest programme that offers a year round Life Skills programme for new entrants through to Year 8 or 9. There are 11,642 teachers from 1550 schools who have been through the Lions Quest training and reaching over 250,000 students.
In addition to its own youth programmes, such as Lions Quest, money will provide young people with scholarships to attend the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre, the Spirit of Adventure, The Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Outward Bound.
