Dear Parents
“The man who thinks he can live without others is mistaken; the one who thinks others can't live without him is even more deluded.” – Jewish Proverb
As a young teacher one of my passions was coaching sport. I recall that a particular mantra that I would constantly share with all my teams was that “A great team will always beat a team of great players”. If the children believed in this, and in the value of the team above the individual, it really was possible to get more than the sum of their individual parts when they stepped onto the paddock. Whilst the validity of the statement might not hold up to rigorous testing (we did lose the odd match!) the principle is undoubtedly true. Working as team enables us to achieve so much more than we might otherwise be capable of, no matter how individually talented.
Last term a highlight for many was our celebration of the FIFA World Cup. There was plenty of team work in evidence around VAS and of course the All Whites were the perfect role models of what can be achieved – as the only ‘undefeated’ team in the tournament they can hold their heads up high. Many teams with undoubtedly more individually talented players went home early from South Africa having underachieved. Very few neutrals would doubt that the best team, Spain, were worthy winners. Isn’t it great when life gives our children such positive messages about the behaviours we would wish to encourage in our youngsters.
Closer to home the results of good teamwork are in evidence around the school. In sport huge strides have been made by many of our teams this year. As they enter the final weeks of Winter Sports competitions I hope they will reflect with pride on the development of both individual skills and team performances.
Just as the old proverb states that “It takes a whole village to raise one child”, it can be equally be applied to our school. The strength of the teamwork and relationships between children, staff, parents and the wider school family is crucial to really making a difference for our children.
In the Victoria Avenue School community we are trying to raise not one but over 500 children. As part of this we have a wonderful cultural diversity in our school therefore understanding and respecting the differences within our community is vital to the success of the whole. This week we have met with our Chinese and Korean families to discuss and reflect on such issues. In addition the celebration of Maori Language Week in school at present has been a wonderful opportunity to share a wider cultural heritage, which links in to our school's Pasifika IBL focus this term. The children have used more than one visitor this week as an impromptu audience for artwork, songs, readings and performances. We would also like to say thank you to the large number of parents who have been in school assisting with our activities.
2011 School Gala
The date is set for our 2011 school gala, Sunday 3rd April. The event in 2009 was a huge success, school families and many others from our local community enjoyed a wonderful day, which had the additional benefit of the PTS raising over $50000.
The children still recall the day and talk excitedly of the next Gala, although for me, and many other families, it will be our first experience of this fantastic event.
Elsewhere in today’s newsletter you will see a notice from the PTS advising of the first meeting of the 2011 Gala Committee. This is not a closed meeting and furthermore there is no committee at present. We do have a small number of members of the 2009 Gala Committee who have agreed to help once again but new people are urgently required.
The Gala itself is a stand-alone event and it would be asking too much to expect the current PTS committee to organise this in addition to all of their other commitments and therefore we are asking for volunteers to help take responsibility for this one event. If you have the enthusiasm and energy to be part of the organisation of our biggest community event of the year please reply to the request. Previous experience of event organisation welcome but not essential!
Let’s make the 2011 Gala an event to remember for all our children.

The Gold Coast
When I went to the Gold Coast
guess where we went, we went to lots of Theme Parks
and our car didn’t get a dent.
We went on a roller coaster called Scooby Doo
There were lots of SCARY things MONSTERS too.
Then we came home we had a barbecue
we had a swim
and had sausages too.
Next we went to Sea World
we saw some dolphins that twirled and twirled.
I went on a really fun ride,
and it went completely on its side.
There was another ride I think it went so fast it was as quick as a wink!
Soon the day was done
and we had so much fun!
Next we went to Wet & Wild
and the weather was very mild.
I went on lots of really fun rides,
some were small and some were wide.
We soon had to go home
we had such a fun time of course we didn’t moan.
Next we went to Dream World
my favourite ride was Spongebob
where you swirled and swirled.
There was a ride that made you dizzy
then we drunk something very fizzy!
Soon we went home on a plane
and the line sure was a pain.
When we got back home we thanked
our parents
and did not moan.
The Gold Coast was very Fun
but now there’s not any sun!!!

Universal Studios
Universal Studios we’re here,
this has gotta be the best day of the year!
Simpsons ride here we come,
while we walk there we start to hum.
The ride is a bit scary,
and Homer is the opposite of hairy.
After the ride,
my sister won’t leave my mum’s side.
My dad made me go on a ride called the Mummy,
inside it wasn’t that sunny.
It gave me a fright,
it was as dark as night,
oh I really didn’t like The Mummy!
Next we went to the Kwik-E-Mart,
(It didn’t really break anyones heart)
Inside we saw a Bart Simpson doll,
unfortunately inside it was a hole.
If someone bought it and had a play,
they might as well throw it away.
After that we went to a Spongebob shop,
inside we went with a hop.
We saw a Spongebob rag,
and a Spongebob bag,
and there were other amazing things too.
We found the Jurassic Park ride,
my mum and sister just wanted to hide.
My dad and I went on,
and soon we were gone,
on an amazing dinosaur adventure!

Clever Recounts of their Really Fantastic Holidays
MY TRIP
Ben my brother he was part of a competition for ping pong and he came second over all.
In the sea there was lots and lots of oil,
it got on some of our togs when we went sailing.
Naughty little monkeys leaping on the doors and windows.I thought that they were cute.
Trapeze was so much fun watching them doing the catch because one person would swing and another person would catch them.
At dinner time, lunch time and breakfast time I really liked most of the foods.
It was YUM!!!
Nice and friendly people who worked at the hotel like Peter and Kenny.
