Term 3 No 4 - 12 August 2010

________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Parents
What a stunning day we had on Tuesday at the cross-country event, after seemingly weeks of rain there was not a cloud in the sky on our chosen day. I must say congratulations to Clare Whittington for organising another first class event and a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who contributed in a wide variety of ways to make the day such a success.

Most important to me was the fact that we took every child in the school down to the Shore Road fields and they all cheered and supported one another as the races unfolded. Our House captains lead the way helping, encouraging and cajoling all of the junior syndicate children as they completed their runs. It was a great example of something very special about our children; the empathy, sportsmanship and kindness they offered to all the runners, whatever their individual abilities or house affiliations.

There were fabulous individual performances from some talented runners and excellent personal achievements from those who battled just to complete the courses without stopping, well done everyone.

Another boon of the sunshine was that we were able to pour the final concrete outside of the new classrooms. The contractors are now busy tidying up small bits and pieces ready for Rooms 12 and 14 to move in to their long awaited new homes next week. Many thanks to those parents and friends who have offered help to the staff this weekend as they prepare the classrooms for occupation.

Parents Meeting – Tuesday 17th August
Further to last week’s newsletter I wish to remind parents that next Tuesday we have a Parents Meeting at 7.00pm in the hall. The format of the evening is as follows:
  • A short introduction outlining National Standards and the    purpose of assessment.
  • Literacy and Numeracy breakout groups - 2 x 20 mins where Anne Bridgman and Jane Cameron will cover current assessment tools used at VAS and how OTJs (Overall Teacher Judgements - the method by which National Standards are to be judged) are formed.
  • An outline of current 2010 reporting schedule and proposal for the future - This will include plans for an online 'Parent Portal' for accessing records and information.
  • We will then break into discussion/feedback groups of approx 6-8 people (depending on numbers attending) each lead by a member of the SMT or Curriculum leadership teams. This is the consultation phase - each table/group will have copies of proposed new report formats together with some key discussion questions. Each leader will record comments and then we will meet to review the feedback.
We aim to be finished before 9.00pm. Following this process a summary of the evening will be produced and distributed to parents with an invitation for further comment.

The usual response rate for parent surveys at VAS has been consistently around the 20% mark, we would hope that we can attract 50+ parents to this evening to give a representative cross-section of our parent body.

It would be helpful to have an idea of numbers of attendees that evening. Please could you This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you intend coming, or phone her on 5200602.

Quiz-night-button.jpg PTS Quiz Night

Finally I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported our PTS Quiz Night last Saturday. We had a fantastic time and Vlad managed to keep some semblance of order throughout most of the proceedings.

The table themes were impressive once again and some costumes were so good that recognising friends was not always as easy as you’d think. Congratulations to the ‘best-dressed’ table, the Scarfies - actually table is not an accurate description it was closer to a blue and gold student flat complete with armchairs and even a beer fridge! Special mention too for our Champions, The Cullens, aka half of the legendary Room 14 crew, who managed to use their deep intellects (and pockets) to secure a third straight win!

Kind regards

H1N1 Flu virus Situation
The information below comes from the Ministry of Education concerning Swine Flu. There has been an incident at school of Swine Flu so vigilence is required. Please note the recommendations from the Ministry:
  • practice good hygiene – wash and dry your hands regularly, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • keep your children home if they are sick
  • phone your doctor or HealthLine for advice
FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION:
We’d like to update you on the current situation with Swine Flu, HIN1.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reports that there is an increase in the numbers of people with H1N1 flu virus. We don’t expect a repeat of last year’s situation, nor do we expect MOH will be recommending that schools and early childhood centres are closed.

A high percentage, nearly 50%, of under 20-year-olds have had the H1N1 flu virus so should now have some natural immunity. There has also been a high rate of vaccination. However, some schools are experiencing very high absences. These tend to be in areas where there weren’t as many cases last year.

MOH and the Ministry of Education would like to thank the 100 schools (including Victoria Avenue School) who have been sending the MOH their sickness data. This is been invaluable in tracking the spread of the virus. The graph on our website shows how MOH is using this data to track incidence.

MOH is reminding everyone to repeat last year’s intensive prevention measures. These are:
  • practice good hygiene – wash and dry your hands regularly, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • stay home if you are sick
  • phone your doctor or HealthLine for advice
People with pre-existing health conditions and pregnant women need to be particularly careful and seek medical advice early if they have flu symptoms.

For more information, visit the Ministry of Health H1N1 webpages at http://www.moh.govt.nz/influenza-a-h1n1.

The Southbound lanes of the Southern Motorway (SH1) will be closed for a maximum of 36 hours from 5pm Saturday September 4 between Gillies Ave and Greenlane. The closure will enable the switch to the new southbound Newmarket Viaduct in time for the Monday morning commute.

Avoid the Southern Motorway (SH1) if you're planning to travel anywhere around Auckland on Saturday night or Sunday. The closure will cause significant delays throughout Auckland's road network.

BASKETBALL
Upcoming event 31 August 2010: There is a basketball exchange with Kings School at Kings. More information as it comes to hand.

Please note there is NO sports exchange on the 17 August.

Basketball Results

  • Year 6 VAS played Parnell. The team started off well, matching basket for basket, but Parnell managed to pull away to beat us 23 – 17. Great team work on the court and a lot more rebounding and passing out of the keyhole during the game.
  • VAS Vikings played Cornwall Park A and lost. Jan Carson and Maddi Devereux scoring a basket each.
  • VAS Vulcans played Cornwall Park B and had a great game but narrowly lost. Luca Mercer was the star this week, scoring 8 baskets and displaying some brilliant offence and defensive work!
FLIPPABALL
What a great effort from the team on Sunday against the winners of last term's B grade. While we were beaten 7-1, the team played extremely well and our youngest players seem to have grown a foot taller as they battle the bigger opposition. Seeing Ollie, Ben and Timor from Year Three up against much bigger boys, yet battle on with the game plan was just great. Nicholas and Fa from Year Four certainly held their own and have proven to be great goalies under 'heavy fire'.
This week's game is on Sunday at 6.30pm - St Ignatius Girls Victoria Ave.

PTS NEWS

Thanks to Simone and Viv (from the 2009 gala committee) and new members, Billy, Josette, Kendra, Frances, Natasha and Lisa for coming to the first gala meeting for our VAS 2011 gala. It is great to have such an enthusiastic team of Mums come forward to pull this event together for our kids and community.

We do still need some parents to fill vital roles. These include: marketing, communication, finance and operations. We would welcome some Dads to join our team also. We have the footprint for running our gala in place from 2009 so promise not to have too many meetings. Junior school parents are encouraged to learn these roles so that information may be passed along through the school for future galas.
