Dear Parents
Open Day and Performance – Date Change
The calendar originally advertised an Open Day on Friday 17th September. Due to some changes to our Year 5/6 performances (Dress Rehearsal will now be on Friday 17th with a matinee performance on Monday 20th) the date for the Open day has now changed to Thursday 16th September. Further details of these events will be in next week’s newsletter.
School Banking
We wish to remind people about our School Banking Programme, run in conjunction with The National Bank. Children can open bank accounts and make deposits at school. They receive an account book to record their deposits and keep track of how their saving is going. The objective of the programme is to help children develop a regular savings habit (no deposit is too small) and help them learn about money and how to manage it. School Banking operates every Wednesday between 8.15 am and 9.00am in Classroom 20. If you’d like to know more, call Helene or Lillian at the Bank on 2522668, come along any Wednesday morning or contact the school office.
After-School Activities for Term 4
Elsewhere in the newsletter you will find information regarding the planned after-school clubs and activities, which are being run at school in addition to our own after-school care programme. There are some new activities, such as Fine Young Artists and a Tutoring Programme, alongside some old favourites. Details of how to book can be found in the links.
Parking
It is an old chestnut that we return to on a regular basis in the newsletter but we have received complaints from both parents and local residents regarding some inconsiderate parking in surrounding streets by VAS parents. Stirling Street has caused the most concern where people have parked in driveways and across the end of the street resulting in difficulty for vehicles trying to turn and exit.
Ultimately whilst respecting the parking restrictions is important, student safety is our highest concern and blocking paths and driveways can increase the possibility of accidents. Bad weather and the wish to park close to school are not reason enough to ignore the safety of our children.
Kind regards
Allan Short
Principal

SPCA CUPCAKE DAY!
This year I organised for our school to take part in the S.P.C.A cupcake day. I was so shocked by the response I almost fainted! The line was huge and we had heaps of cupcakes. We raised lots of money, $416.00 to be exact. I couldn’t have done it without all the children who baked and bought cupcakes and school staff such as Mrs Clark and Miss Bridgman.

| Olivia is no 'Second Best!'
Victoria Avenue schools senior school Speech winner Olivia M represented our school in the Remuera Zone finals last week. It was a tight competition and Olivia really had to wait her turn with eleven finalist representing the cluster.
Olivia showed little worry as she was prepared for the task at hand, if only her supporters were as relaxed as she.
Finally after all the fantastic speeches had their turn to shine, Olivia took the stage and had her chance to impress the judges with her speech 'Second the best.' or in her case first!
Before you knew it Olivia had wowed the audience and she calmly retook her seat. Its was time for the judges to make their decisions. Fifteen minutes passed and the announcement was made. Olivia took out the competition. She will now represent the Remurea cluster against all other area clusters in Auckland.
Well done Olivia and Good luck for your next competition, we are all so proud of you already! |

Basketball Year 6 Team Interschool!
The boys had an awesome time at Kings on Tuesday. It was great to see the team working together and giving all team members an opportunity to shoot, even though they were close enough to shoot themselves.
I would like to welcome Calvin Fraser to the team. He will be playing with us for the Spring Season, which starts 13th September. I will advise the time as soon as it becomes available.
Practice on Friday 7.30am rain or shine. We have Randy from Basketball Auckland taking us on Fridays at the moment and the skills/drills he is showing the senior players are invaluable.
No game on Monday.

BASKETBALL RESULTS
VAS Year 6…A strong opening from Year 6 team against Churchill Park School, with some amazing shots from out of the keyhole. Churchill Park came back stronger in the second half and won 20-16. The team worked tirelessly around the court to make some impressive intercepts and rebounds.
VAS Vikings played Cornwall Park and lost. Emma Collard and Maddi Devereux scored all our points. The whole team played a very fast and exciting game of basketball, managing to keep Cornwall Park limited in points.
The VAS Vulcans narrowly lost to The Kohi Hot Shots on Monday. It was a great game, seeing a much improved Team Performance by the Vulcans. Karan B had a very dominant offensive game, Luca did some amazing steals (even after winning the Zone Cross Country that day), Dan was great on defence, Sarah S was always in position ready for the ball, Michael P proved how good he is at both the left and right hand dribble, and Michael M always managed to get free – not that easy against this team. We’ll nail it next time!

Soccer Success
Last term one of our students, Yasmeen Kareem, made the Auckland Football Federation U12 Talent Development Program which consisted of 50 mainly 12 year old girls.
From these girls Yasmeen has just been selected as one of three goalkeepers among 36 girls who will represent Auckland in the annual Weir Rose Bowl tournament which is held over four days in the Term Three holidays. In all there are ten teams from three federations competing for the trophy.
Well done Yasmeen!
