Term 2 No 1 - 5 May 2011

Dear Parents
Welcome to Term 2 and I hope that you and your family had a pleasant Easter break wherever you may have spent it. It was wonderful to catch up with both children and parents on their arrival to school on Monday. Apologies to those of you disappointed at the non-appearance of the usual start of term coffee. Unfortunately the coffeeman was ill, and judging by the rain he’d have had a likely shortfall of customers anyway.
Despite the mixed weather this week the children are eagerly preparing for their Winter sports fixtures. There has been a great buzz of activity on the netball and basketball courts, and the running club had their first early morning training session this week. A big thank you to all of our parents who are involved with sports coaching in the various codes, enjoy your seasons with the teams and above all have FUN!
There is so much to look forward to this term; Year 5 Camp; Sports Exchanges; Trips, Grandparents Day, Spell-athon and preparations for our Term 3 Arts Café to name a few.
Tomorrow we have our daffodil Mufti Day. All pupils in mufti are to bring in a gold coin ($1 or $2) and each will receive a daffodil bulb. As we did last year each class will then arrange a planting day to populate the bank above Dragon Drive with even more daffodils.
At assembly tomorrow, (please note it is a 9.45am start rather than the usual 9.00am) we will have a presentation of a ‘large cheque’ from the Gala committee to the school. The final total will be revealed in next week’s newsletter.
Grandparents Day
On Tuesday 7th June we are holding our Grandparents Day here at Victoria Avenue School. We usually hold this event immediately after Labour Weekend, however this year it has changed due to the Rugby World Cup affecting term dates.
We have however chosen another ‘long weekend’, Queen’s Birthday, which is often a time when extended families get together, and we hope as many Grandparents as possible will be able to visit with their grandchildren on that day.
As a large number of grandparents usually attend we will run separate morning and afternoon sessions in order to accommodate everyone comfortably. Grandparents of Senior Syndicate pupils and those in Rooms 19-21 will be invited to our morning session and those with grandchildren in the Junior School and Rooms 16-18 will be invited to our afternoon session, of course some may qualify for, and wish to attend, both sessions! (Please note to even up numbers the Middle Syndicate has been split with three classes in the morning and three in the afternoon)
The day will begin with an assembly, lead by the Principal, followed by a small concert where the children will perform a number of items for grandparents. After this grandparents will accompany their grandchildren back to their classrooms to meet their teachers and look at their work. Children will then give their grandparents a tour of the school, finally arriving back at the hall where we will have morning/afternoon tea together.
Programme times are as follows:
9.15am Welcome and Assembly (Year 4-6)
9.55am Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
10.30am Morning tea for grandparents in the hall
Early Lunch 12.00-1.00pm
1.15pm Welcome and Assembly (Year 1-3)
2.00pm Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
2.30pm Afternoon tea for grandparents in the hall
The event will also coincide with the start of a Mini-Book Week (our major book week is in Term 4). Grandparents are once again invited to go along to the library and chose a book with their Grandchildren that they may wish to purchase and donate to the school library. Grandparents should feel no obligation to do so but many ask if they can leave a donation of some sort on the day and we feel this may be an appropriate way to gift something of lasting value to the school.
There is a very special bond that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren and the opportunity to share time together is very important. I know from previous experience that some grandparents will travel quite some distance to attend such days and it is always a pleasure to welcome them to school. If your child does not have a Grandparent who can attend but there is a significant older person in their lives that they would wish to share the day with, then of course they may invite them instead.
Kind regards
Allan Short

2. Reporting Absences:
Thank you to the many parents who keep the school fully informed of your child's absence. It makes our job so much easier if we are notified - a good way to let us know is to email your child's teacher AND the office. You can use the report absence button on the top right hand corner of our home page.
3. Teachers' Driveway:
Please ALWAYS bring your children into school via the Dragon Drive, Stirling St or Spencer St entrances. The teacher's driveway is for vehicles only and it is very dangerous for pedestrians especially young children. Thank you for supporting us in this.
4. Website and Newsletters:
We have done some housekeeping with the arrangement of newsletters n the website. If you wish to access old newsletters from the emails I have sent the links may not work. Best to use the search at the top of the page or go to OUR SCHOOL on the top menu and choose the year you require.
NOTE: All links from now on will work.

Gate Code for 250 Victoria Avenue - Teachers' Drive
You may not be aware that our car park is unfortunately too small to accommodate all of the vehicles of staff members. Several members of staff each day have to park in one of the surrounding streets.
We have always had the rule that from Monday to Friday between 7.00am and 4.00pm entrance into the staff car park is for staff vehicles and deliveries only. The gate code has been available to parents for use outside of this time. Unfortunately several parents have abused this and are using the staff car park for their own convenience, particularly at busy times of the day, resulting in even more congestion.
We have therefore taken the step of changing the school gate code. Outside of the restricted times the old code is still in operation. Between 7.00am and 4.00pm the new code is in operation. For major events, or in the case of an emergency staff will open the gate for parental vehicles during the day. |
