Term 3 No 2 - 11 August 2011

Dear Parents

Well after a night of heavy rain the sun now seems to be winning the battle and fingers crossed the cross-country today will have some good weather. Looking out across the playground as I write this before school starts today, the children’s spirits certainly do not seem to have been dampened, there is a real sense of excitement about day ahead.

It is actually hard to believe that in the next two weeks we will have completed three major school events the School Cross-Country, the Arts Extravaganza and our Rugby World Cup Festival. The children and staff have been working hard – doing laps of the school grounds training for today; adding the intricate final touches to their magnificent art projects and learning the rules and skills of Rippa rugby.

I am sure that each and every event will be a fantastic success but I do wish to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the staff team in preparing our children for each activity. Alongside all of the day-to-day tasks they really do put in the hard yards to make these experiences ones to remember. As a parent I can see just how excited my own three children are at what lies ahead so to Clare Whittington, Catherine Kelly and her Arts team and to all the other staff, I’d like to say a big “thank you” to you all.

Thinking School Award
As you know in June I had the privilege to travel to the 15th International Conference on Thinking, in Belfast, and then on to England were I spent a week visiting Exeter University’s Cognitive Education Centre (CEC)   and leading “thinking schools” in the UK. An important part of the trip was my presentation of Victoria Avenue School’s application for Thinking School accreditation.

Over the past four years the CEC has run an accreditation programme, and the VAS staff have been working on an application for us to join this community of schools. I presented a hard copy of the application together with a DVD produced by Frances Coleman and Jess McQuinn, which showcases VAS, our children, and their work in the areas of IBL and Thinking Skills.

Last Friday in assembly I was able to share with the children the beautiful glass “Thinking School Award”, which we have been given by the University of Exeter in recognition of our gaining the accreditation. We are only the second international school to receive this award. We were also informed during the conference that the 16th International Conference on Thinking will take place in Wellington in January 2013. I hope VAS will have a strong representation at this event both as participants and presenters showcasing work we are developing in this area.

Staffing

As Room 7 continues to fill quickly we will be starting a new ‘New Entrant’ class in Week 9. I am delighted to inform you that Alison Settle has agreed to take on responsibility for this class. Alison is well known to many staff and families at Victoria Avenue School. She was a valued member of our Junior Syndicate team for five years before leaving us after the birth of her son in 2009. She will bring great experience, enthusiasm and fun into the new Room 15, we look forward to her joining us once again!

Kind regards

Allan Short
