Term 4 No 7 - 8 December 2011

Dear Parents

There are a number of important notices in today’s newsletter so please read carefully. There will be no newsletter next week but we will be sending out a Summer ‘Welcome back to School’ newsletter towards the end of January.

I would like to say thank you for your friendship, support and encouragement for our school throughout 2011, it has been a quite amazing year, and together I believe we really do make a huge difference for each and every one of our very special students.

Whatever you are doing and wherever you may travel Kendra and I wish you a relaxing and fun-filled summer with your families and look forward to seeing you back again in 2012.

Kind regards
Allan
60 Years - Join the Party
Book the evening of Friday 23rd March in to your diaries NOW! As you will see from the PTS notices this will be our key friendraising and fundraising event for 2012. The school celebrates 60 years in 2012 and we will be marking this date in a number of ways. The planning for the evening of March 23rd is well-advanced and we will be having a major party that night. So please start gathering friends and family to attend, organize the babysitter early and get ready for a fantastic and memorable night of fun and celebration!!!

2012 Classes
As previously mentioned next Monday morning (12th December) your children will all spend time visiting their new classroom and they will meet their new teachers – with the exception of those few who are overseas. This is for most an exciting time although a few children may be apprehensive about the change. As parents you can make a big difference in making this change as smooth as possible.

Please support your child and the school by discussing this change in a positive way. If they are in a class with some pupils they do not know very well then this is an opportunity to make new friends (their old ones won't disappear…they will be there at break and lunchtimes!) We encourage our children to have a ‘glass half full’ attitude to such changes in their life; new class, new teacher, new friends, new opportunities.

Congratulations
We have a fantastic staff team here at VAS and this week we were all delighted to celebrate the success of Hiranthi Amarasekera, Esther McEwan and Ally Young, who gained their fully registered teacher status after completing their two-year Beginning Teacher programme. Thank you to all three ladies for their professionalism, dedication and commitment towards our children and the school – Well done!

Shop and Help our School
Today we received a large box of books courtesy of the Telecom Bills to Storybooks programme. Those of you who are Telecom customers and had nominated Victoria Avenue as your favourite primary school all contributed to this free gift so thank you very much.

We also received a $100 gardening gift voucher from Bay Audiology. Their clients who purchased hearing aids in September or October were able to nominate a school to receive this so our thanks to the Grandparents who helped in this area.

The PTS this week discussed a similar loyalty scheme being operated by Mitre 10 Mega on Lunn Ave. If you make any purchase there just mention VAS at the till and 2% of your purchase cost will be donated back to VAS – it really is as simple as that. Please encourage all friends and family to do the same, every little bit does help.

Finally this week children in Pohutukawa house enjoyed first use of the huge range of sporting equipment chosen by Miss Whittington after collecting the most yummy stickers this year. Remember that you can collect these all year round as they really do provide us with amazing new equipment each year. Links for Yunmmy Sticker Promotion:

Thank You
Thank you for your attendance at last week’s Carol Service at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell. A virtually full Cathedral was an amazing sight as pupils, staff, parents and friends, past and present, celebrated the Christmas season and the fantastic year we have had at Victoria Avenue School.

The Cathedral is a wonderful venue for our Carol Service each year and the input of our children, singing, playing, dancing and reading was very special. Our collection raised $1745 and for this we are most grateful. All your donations go directly towards covering the not inconsiderable costs of running the cathedral, and we acknowledge the support of the Dean and her staff in helping us run the event at Holy Trinity again this year.

Reports
Staff are working hard to complete your child’s end of year reports. We will have them ready for you to collect as early in Week 8 as possible. The school office will send an email to families when they are ready. If anyone is unable to collect their child’s report they will be posted home at the end of term.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES ETC
Community based groups have approached us to inform parents of various activities available locally.
