Term 1 No 1 - 25 January 2012

Dear Parents

Happy New Year!

I hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer with your families and that the children are ready for the start of school next week. The staff have been hard at work preparing for the term and are looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Thursday 2nd February.

As you will read below the PTS have arranged for The Coffee Guy to be at school next Thursday so hopefully that will give people an extra incentive to stay on site and catch up after the break. In particular it is always important to make our new families feel welcome at the start of the school year so if you spot an unfamiliar face at the classroom door please introduce them to others in our school community.

We have an exciting first term and year ahead; see you next week!

Kind regards
Allan

60 Years - Join the Party
Book the evening of Friday 23rd March in to your diaries NOW! As you will see from the PTS notices this will be our key friend-raising and fundraising event for 2012. The school celebrates 60 years in 2012 and we will be marking this date in a number of ways. The planning for the evening of March 23rd is well-advanced and we will be having a major party that night. So please start gathering friends and family to attend, organize the babysitter early and get ready for a fantastic and memorable night of fun and celebration!!!

This should be a fabulous event but we need your support.
Staffing
We are saying ‘hello’ to three new members of staff this term. Maree Harris (Room 3), Fiona McDonald (Room 5) and Ilona Lumborg (Room 8), I am sure that you will all join me in welcoming them to our school family. We also say ‘welcome home’ to Charlotte Edgar (Room 10) and Mirren Fredricksen (Room 2) after their adventures overseas during 2011.

A number of staff have also ‘moved’ this holiday to take up residence in another classroom – Kylie Wight (Room 13), Stuart Eeles (Room 15), Nadia Lazarus (Room 16) and Frances Coleman (Room 20).

Everyone on the staff is looking forward to greeting the children next week.
Meet the Teacher Evening
Please notice that this event is at 7.00pm on Thursday 9th February. It will start with a brief meeting in the school hall for all parents followed by an opportunity for everyone to meet with their child’s teacher in their classrooms. We hope that every child will have a least one parent at this event. In previous years the evening has finished in relaxed style with drinks and nibbles outside courtesy of the PTS – hopefully the weather will be fine and this can be repeated.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES ETC
Community based groups have approached us to inform parents of various activities available locally.
- we also have a range of options offered by local providers in the foyer of the administration area of the school. These are available to view :

Building Work
For once we have had no major internal renovations this summer, however there has been much external activity over the holidays. I have outlined briefly work done.
  • Marvellous Makeover – The week before Christmas the vision of the children became reality as the project was completed. We now have a new decking area between the two decks built last year to the rear of Rooms 8, 9 and 10, together with a fantastic staircase linking it to the boardwalk below.
  • Senior Class block – It may be hard to see but the oldest classrooms in the school, Rooms 1-6, have been given a new roof for Christmas!
  • Field – At the end of 2011 we had major wearing of some areas of grass on the field. Mr Davy has addressed these areas and the rain has greatly assisted in the growth of the new grass. It isn’t yet perfect but a big improvement on six weeks ago.
  • Shading – Yesterday the Junior Block shading project was completed. The area outside rooms 11-14 looks fantastic and should provide additional space to work and play in every season of the year.

Uniform
The Uniform Shop will be open on Wednesday 1st Feb 2012, between 8.30 and 10.00am. Orders placed online during the school holidays may be picked up during this time, otherwise they will be delivered to your child's class on Thurs 2nd Feb.

After-School Activities
We are finalising the activity programme for the Term 1 activities and will advertise this to parents during the first week of the term.
PTS
On the first day of school we will have The Coffee Guy on site so we can have a catch up after dropping children. Please join us for a chat! It is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and welcome new families into the school.

We would also like to encourage any parents to come and join the PTS. There is much to be done this year and the more helpers we have the less work we all have to do. All are welcome, old families and new. It is not all hard work…we have fun too! If you are interested either let the school office know or phone Simone Middleton (PTS Chair) on 021 149 8298.
Calendar
A hard copy of the Term 1 calendar will be sent home to all families with your child next week. You can however look on our website were the provisional calendar for Term 1 has been published.
Newsletters
We will continue to email the link to the newsletter to families each Thursday, where it will appear on the school website (starting Thursday 9th February). Not only does this save on administration time but also the cost of printing is not insignificant, both financially and environmentally. If any families find it difficult to access the newsletter electronically please let the office know and we will arrange for a hard copy to be available for you to pick up from school.
Walking School Bus
If you are interested in joining one of our six walking school buses in 2012 full details of routes and contact details of the coordinators can be found HERE
